Police Officer (Certified and Non-Certified) 00160Law Enforcement Officer IPurpose of the PositionTo protect life and property of the University community and its visitors by providing law enforcement services, traffic and crowd control, and fire prevention and safety.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to PositionRequired for Certified Officer:Ability to successfully complete associated field training within one year of employmentAbility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidaysAbility to deal effectively with individuals and groupsAbility to collect and assemble pertinent facts, to exercise tact, initiative, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling law enforcement mattersAbility to write clear and concise reportsDemonstrated computer experienceExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work with a culturally diverse department and University communityAbility to perform strenuous physical activities such as running, lifting, jumping, bicycling, and climbingKnowledge of and ability to apply state laws and University regulation, law enforcement techniques, procedures, operations and investigations, safety and security methods, crime prevention techniques, and positive community relationsRequired for Non Certified Officer:Ability to successfully complete basic law enforcement academy training and associated field training within one year of employmentAbility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidaysAbility to deal effectively with individuals and groupsAbility to collect and assemble pertinent facts, to exercise tact, initiative, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling law enforcement mattersAbility to write clear and concise reportsDemonstrated computer experienceExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work with a culturally diverse department and University communityAbility to perform strenuous physical activities such as running, lifting, jumping, bicycling, and climbingKnowledge of and ability to apply state laws and University regulation, law enforcement techniques, procedures, operations and investigations, safety and security methods, crime prevention techniques, and positive community relationsEducation, Experience, Licensure, Certification RequiredEducation Required for Certified and Non Certified Officers:High school diploma or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diplomaValid driver's licenseCertified OfficersApplicants must have current/active Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) certification, to include successful completion of DCJS-approved field trainingNon Certified Officers:Ability to successfully complete basic law enforcement academy training and associated field training within one year of employmentAdditional ConsiderationsExperience Preferred:Experience working at a university or college institution or municipal public safety agency in a public safety capacityEducation Preferred:Associate's or bachelor's degree or 60 credit hours towards a degree programSalary InformationStarting at $54,827, commensurate with education and experience.BenefitsThis position includes Commonwealth of Virginia and Christopher Newport University employee benefits.
