Chief Park Ranger

The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Chief Park Ranger. The Chief Park Ranger will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and schedules of the Park Ranger Unit. This leadership position will act as a liaison between the department and the Norfolk Police Department, and State Law enforcement agencies while acting as the first point of contact for visitors utilizing recreational facilities; greets and educates visitors. This ensures we will continue to provide quality recreational services that enrich the lives of Norfolk's residents. Department Starting Salary: $60,869.43 - 69,849.07

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Manages the day to day operations and schedules of the Park Ranger Unit.
  • Monitors the use of all City recreation facilities, enforces City policy and codes pertaining to the use of athletic fields and recreation areas. Issues citations and makes arrests as needed. Opens and closes recreation facilities.
  • Acts as the First point of contact for visitors utilizing recreational facilities; greets and educates visitors
  • Represents the Department off Recreation, Parks and Open space at community gatherings such as civic league and city sponsored events.
  • Navigates permit database to issue the proper permits to customers and ensure all of those using the athletic facilities have obtained permits.
  • Acts as a liaison between the department and the Norfolk Police Department, and State Law enforcement agencies.
  • Assists visitors in recreational facilities by responding to questions about services and offering directions.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s): Certification as a Special Conservator of the Peace CPR/First Aid certified within six months of hire. Additional Preferred Experience: Two years experience in law enforcement, military, or park operations preferred.

Work Location: Lakewood Athletics Office, 1612 Willow Wood Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509 Work Hours: Saturday through Friday. Hours vary, flexible scheduling required
