Job Duties:
We are hiring a Carpenter to assist in a wide variety of building repairs, renovations and construction.
This position will be filled as a Carpenter I or Carpenter II - depending on qualification of the selected candidate.*
Work involves receiving work order assignments from supervisor to perform a variety of tasks such as:
- General maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities
- Repair furniture, doors, windows, locks, door closures, panic bars and all types of roofs
- Pour concrete, assist in framing, trim, siding, cornice, roofing and cabinetry on public buildings and facilities
- Operate a pressure washer. Have knowledge of repair and installation of brick pavers.
- Use a multitude of tools and equipment associated with the trade to construct and repair various wood articles
- May also be required to move furniture.
- Effectively assist in building or repairing all types of structures in accordance with standards of the trade.
- Correctly operate hand and power tools following all safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean vehicle and job site.
- Keep neat and orderly records in order for future reference and statistical purposes.
- Must have good customer service.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described in the job description.
The ideal candidate for the Carpenter I will have hands-on experience in pressure washing, paver installation, interior and exterior trim work, cabinet and hardware installation, flooring, roofing, siding, and general carpentry.

The ideal candidate for the Carpenter II will have advanced experience in renovations and new construction. Skilled in finish and rough carpentry, framing, siding, roofing, commercial flooring, concrete forming and pouring, doors and windows installation, pavers, and pressure washing. Capable of reading blueprints, preparing cost estimates and reports, maintaining records, providing customer service, and training and directing others.

Official City Job Description: Working Conditions: Minimum Requirements: Carpenter I Minimums: High school or vocational school, or GED, plus two (2) years in fields such as framing, trim, cornice, siding, cabinetry that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
Carpenter II Minimums: High School, or GED, plus four (4) years experience in carpentry work in the capacity of General Carpenter, Floor Covering Installer, Roofer, Framer, or Form Carpenter; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.

Preferences: Preventative maintenance, renovation and new construction experience to include (some areas may be more applicable for the II level):
Experienced in Pressure washing and pavers
Finish carpentry experience to include Interior and exterior trim work.
Framing and rough carpentry.
Installing cabinets locks and hardware
Experience installing pavers
Record keeping experience
Customer service experience
Building maintenance
Repair and installation of all types of siding, roofing, and commercial flooring.
Removing, forming and pouring concrete.
Maintenance, repair and installation of residential and commercial flooring, doors and windows, and locks and hardware.
Ability to read, understand and work from blueprints.
Ability to train and direct the work of others.
Ability to prepare detailed reports, cost estimates and specifications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with merchants, the public, supervisor and co-workers.
