Class Summary
Assist in providing security for the corrections building; and does related work as required.

Nature of Work
Individual will be responsible for data entry, scheduling visits, checking visitors in and out of the jail, acting as a receptionist answering phone and directing callers to the correct agency/person or answering their questions, working extensively with the public by telephone and/or face to face; must be able to work independently. Individual will be responsible for maintaining computerized informational databases and related work as required. Performs routine inspections of all persons and packages entering the Corrections building. Remains alert to potential incidents in public hallways, notifies supervisors or deputies when necessary.

  • Operate standard office machines and equipment.
  • Perform general clerical and office duties as assigned.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand for long periods, bend, squat, and lift up to 15 pounds. Positions typically involve sedentary work that requires walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 15 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis to lift, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and involve routine keyboard operations.

Minimum Qualifications
High school or GED; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Individual must be able to understand and follow oral and written directions. Individual must communicate clearly and courteously. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia of North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.

Special Requirements
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. Successful completion of application, oral interview, of a police background investigation, including polygraph examination.
