Description: Under general supervision, performs specialized and manual work in connection with mosquito control tasks. Work involves field inspections and pesticide applications to mosquito habitats which include but is not limited to ditches, ponds, BMPs, woodland pools, and catch basins; mosquito habitat management; various forms of source reduction including but not limited to tire pickup and recycling; operation of vehicles and mechanical equipment necessary to complete mosquito control related tasks. This position reports to the District Supervisor and Field Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Works with crews engaged in sources reduction activities and the application of pesticides for the control of mosquitoes, as directed and performs work as a laborer.
- Performs routine field inspections to identify areas of larval and adult mosquito population
- Pesticide application to mosquito habitats during the mosquito season in assigned zones
- Conducts home inspections for citizens to identify the source of the mosquito related problem
- Inventory and maintenance of equipment, supplies, vehicles, and work spaces
- Provide respectful and courteous customer service when interacting with the general public
- Operate Commission vehicles and equipment safely and appropriately
- Operate specialized vehicles including: Larviciding and adulticiding ( ULV ) trucks, Utility terrain vehicles (UTV's), Dump Truck, Trailer
- Walks and clears numerous ditches and drainage ways of brush, fallen leaves, trees and undergrowth to maintain drainage ways.
- Operates hand tools (such as shovels, pitch forks, weed eaters, chain saws, bush hooks, wheelbarrows, etc.), specialized vehicles and motorized equipment, to maintain drainage ways for the purpose of source reduction.
- Must be familiar with, have detailed knowledge of and independently service at least one larvicide/adulticide zone within 2 months (8 weeks) of the beginning of the mosquito season.
- Works together with a crew to complete work which includes but is not limited to special projects, and large scale pesticide applications.
- Prepares daily work reports and completes additional forms and reports, as required.
- Will be required to work overtime during the mosquito season to perform scheduled nighttime truck spraying, as needed.
- Will be required to assist in training new Mosquito Control Technicians.
- Performs additional tasks in the course of mosquito control operations as directed.

Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : Based on departmental needs and job description.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Based on departmental needs and requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications - Graduation from high school or GED or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- No experience is necessary; we will train.
- Must be 21 years of age; possess a valid driver's license and a Division of Motor Vehicle report acceptable to the Commission's insurance carrier and in compliance with the Commission's driving standards.
- The job requires standing, walking, moving, carrying, bending, kneeling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
- Must acquire and maintain a Virginia Registered Pesticide Technician Certification within 2 months of hiring date and maintained throughout employment
- Must acquire and maintain a Virginia Category 8 Public Health License within 18 months of hiring date and maintained throughout employment.
- Preferably 1 year of experience in mosquito control or semi-skilled maintenance operations
- Experience working with pesticides is preferred, but not required.
- Experience in outdoor manual work is preferred.
- Basic mosquito and/or pest control knowledge preferred, but not required.
