Come join the City of Virginia Beach Public Works team as an Painter II! A Painter II performs painting and related tasks on municipal facilities.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Painting/staining the interior and exterior areas of all city owned buildings, structures, parking lots, light poles etc. to meet modern and past standards.
- Prepare surfaces by taping and applying chemical solutions for degreasing, acid etchings, chromatic coatings or fillers such as putty, glaze and caulking.
- Follow all safety procedures and operate automotive equipment in a safe manner.
- Maintain clear and concise records of work time and materials used.
- Prevent loss of materials caused by improper storage and handling.
- Use of high reach lifts, spray equipment, ladders and safety practices are used daily.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Official City Job Description: Working Conditions: Minimum Requirements: MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus four (4) years experience in the field of painting that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.

Preferences: Most qualified candidates will have the following preferred experience indicated in the application:
- 5 years professional painting experience
- Experience using a work management system such as Hansen or similar database
- Customer service experience with demonstrated skill in communication and cooperation
- Experience and demonstrated knowledge of stains, sealers, solvents and most paints, spray equipment, lifts and safe practices.
