This position primarily supports the Department's Planetarium Programming at the Chesapeake Planetarium and other city facilities, serving the public of all ages. The Recreation Leader will assist with delivering engaging educational and recreational programs related to astronomy, space science, and other scientific and outdoor recreation topics. Additionally, the position may support other environmental, outdoor programs, and citywide special events at community centers, facilities, and parks, which include but are not limited to public educational events, interactive exhibits, family programs, and seasonal activities.
Related duties include but are not limited to:
Assists in planning, setting up, and facilitating programs, demonstrations, and events at the Chesapeake Planetarium and other city facilities for participants of all ages.
Provides customer service that meets the expectations of the City's Customer Service Initiative to diverse groups, including children, teens, and adults. Assist with visitor inquiries, ensuring a positive experience for all attendees.
Responsible for program and participant safety; inventory control; and set up, take down and clean-up of facility and work areas.
Responds to accidents and injuries, may perform basic first aid.
May assist with processing program registrations and collect payments.
Leads or assists in the facilitation of hands-on educational activities that align with Planetarium programming. Support a wide range of age groups, from children to adults, in various educational and interactive experiences.
Addresses and resolves participant issues or conflicts in a calm, professional manner. Report any concerns to appropriate management.
Controls the disbursement, collection, storage of equipment and overall site inventory.
Organizes site equipment; expresses safety and recreation rules and regulations, demonstrates game and outdoor recreational equipment; makes safe decisions; and interprets directions.
Submits written reports, of accidents/incidents, equipment and inventory needs, to supervisor in a timely manner.
Inspects facilities and play areas for safety/damage, enforces safety rules and regulations and maintains organization.
May assist with other environmental or outdoor activities such as nature hikes, science walks, astronomy programs, and special events at parks or community centers.
Requires a degree of mobility which would allow for interaction with the public in active and passive games and recreational activities.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT :
Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. May require a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards . .
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Employee must have ability to: independently lift chairs and tables; effectively communicate with public and staff; complete written forms and reports; lift 40 pounds. Experience in recreational or educational programming, especially with diverse age groups.
Basic knowledge of astronomy and science and outdoor recreational programming.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage the public and work in a team environment.
Basic computer skills.
Customer service experience.
